The Step-by-Step Guide to Solving the Third Layer

Here’s a step-by-step guide to solving the third layer of a 3×3 Rubik’s Cube

Step 1: Creating the Yellow Cross

  1. To create a yellow cross
  2. Bring the front side to the right side
  3. Right side up
  4. Top side to the left side
  5. Right side downwards
  6. Top side to the right side
  7. Front side to the left

Note:

If you have a yellow dot at the top, apply the above algorithm 3 times to get a yellow cross. If you have the yellow anchor on top, apply this algorithm 2 times to get a yellow cross. If you have a yellow line on top, apply this algorithm 1 time to get a yellow cross.

Step 2: Solving the edge pieces of the third layer

After getting a yellow cross 

Rotate the top of the cube to get 2 matching edge pieces. We will always have 2 matching edge pieces; rotate the top side to align them correctly. 

If the 2 matching colors are right beside each other. Apply this algorithm

  1. Hold the cube so that one matching edge piece goes on the back of the cube and one goes to the right side
  2. Then bring the Right side up
  3. Top side to the left side
  4. Right side down
  5. Top to the left
  6. Right side up
  7. Top side to the left side 2 times
  8. and Right side down
  9. Now move the top of the cube to the left side, and all of the four edge pieces should be with their matching centerpieces.

Note:

If your matching edge pieces are not right beside each other and you have one matching edge piece on the back side and one on the front side. Then you need to apply the above algorithm 2 times.

Step 3: Solving the cornerpieces of the third layer

To solve the cornerpieces look for a cornerpiece that is in its right position. It may be twisted; we need it to be in its right place.

  1. Now hold the cube so that that matching corner piece comes on the right side.
  2. Now move the top side to the left side
  3. Right side up
  4. Top side to the right side
  5. Left side up
  6. Top side to the left side
  7. Right side down
  8. Top side to the right side
  9. and left side down

Now check whether the other 3 cornerpieces are in between their matching centerpieces. If they are not, apply this algorithm 1 or 2 times until they are in the right place.

Once all 4 corner pieces are in their right place, we will need to place them in their right position.

  1. To do that, Bring the right side down
  2. Bottom side to the right side
  3. Right side up
  4. Bottom side to the left

Repeat these 4 steps until the cornerpiece is in its right place and position. Now rotate the top of the cube and repeat these 4 steps to get the other 3 cornerpieces in their desired place and position.
